CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Police officers, first responders and public school teachers will soon be eligible for home buying assistance in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

The Charlotte Observer reports the city of Charlotte has received a $500,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta to create the “Community Heroes Homeownership Program.” Charlotte will contribute $1.5 million to the program, which will be administered by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership.

Workers will be eligible for up to $30,000 in down payment assistance. The leader of the bank’s community investment, economic development and affordable housing programs, Arthur Fleming, says such workers often earn too little to qualify for other home buying assistance.

Applications open Nov. 18. Homes must be in Mecklenburg County and cost no more than $250,000. Other eligibility requirements include income limits.
