Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and civil rights activist who played a key role in the American

until his assassination in 1968. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1929, King was educated at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University. He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1948 and soon became a leader of the civil rights movement in the United States. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his nonviolent civil rights activism

during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The speech, which was delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters,called for an end to racism in the United States and the realization of racial equality.
