August 25, 2025: Thanks to a forward-thinking law enacted 108 years ago, the Organic Act of August 25, 1916, we can now explore some of the most beautiful landscapes and historically important places in our country. President Woodrow Wilson formally created the National Park Service (NPS) on this day. This shows a strong confidence that America's natural beauties and historic treasures are not just for today, but for future generations as well.
We are especially lucky to live in Western North Carolina, where we have the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is a great example of the NPS's important work. The Organic Act's long-lasting vision has made it possible for us to explore old woods, trek beautiful routes, and breathe in the fresh mountain air, all of which are just a short drive away.Before 1916, the beautiful landscapes that would become our national parks were often not taken care of properly, which made them easy target
