Buncombe/Rutherford County -- January 1, 2026 : Firefighters from across the region are working today to contain a brush fire in the Shumont area of Rutherford County. The blaze, which was first reported around 7:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, is located near 905 Bald Mountain Road.
According to latest reports, the fire has consumed approximately 16 acres.
