This critical 5-mile stretch in Haywood County, devastated by Hurricane Helene in late 2024, has transitioned from emergency stabilization to a massive, permanent rebuilding effort aimed at making the interstate more resilient than ever before.
While the eastbound lanes were completely lost to the Pigeon River, NCDOT successfully reopened the corridor with one lane in each direction this past March, a testament to the initial emergency response.
