A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
This past fiscal year has been an incredible one.

The retirement of Gary Higgins saw the close of 36 years of dedicated service to the landowners and citizens of Buncombe County.

Gary left quite a legacy and very big shoes to fill. I am grateful and excited to begin the
journey.
Since joining the Buncombe County Soil and Water District (BCSWCD) in March, I have been
amazed by the incredibly resilient and committed staff. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed
the way we have approached our work, however it has not deterred us from continuing to serve
the citizens of Buncombe County through providing conservation technical assistance and conservation
planning;  cost sharing on soil and water conservation practice installation; environmental education;
and farmland preservation.

While it certainly hasn’t been business as usual the usual business is getting done. We continue to strive
to improve ad maintain the quality of the county’s water and soil resources and protect and enhance the
economic and scenic benefits of local farms and farmlands.

Keep reading to learn more about the great projects and services Anthony, Ariel, Jessica andTaira have
completed in FY20 which began July 1, 2019 and ended June 30, 2020. Some of the highlights are:
Anthony provided technical assistance to nearly 350 county residents,
Ariel’s hard work was recognized when the Farm Heritage Trail won a national award, Jessica
has increased our social media and outreach efforts to better share the stories of our work
and our partners and finally Taira reached over 7,000 local students with our environmental
education programs. And that is just the start!

Finally I want to recognize and thank the BCSWCD Board of Supervisors and all of our partners without
which we would not be able to provide such excellent service: the N. C. Division of Soil and Water Conservation;
the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service; the N. C Foundation for Soil and Water Conservation;
the N. C. Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts; and the Mountain Valleys Resource Conservation
and Development Council.

Additionally we recognize and appreciate the support we receive from Buncombe County government and the County Commissioners. Together they all make our work possible.

 I am humbled to join this incredible organization and look forward to the many new challenges, rewards and triumphs I am sure are waiting for us along the road ahead.
