Asheville Police Department November  4, 2021

#SAFETYAWARENESS The Asheville Police Department has received credible information that individuals are drugging other's drinks to make them more vulnerable. If you see someone taking advantage of an intoxicated individual, please call 911 immediately.
Please protect yourselves by not leaving your drink unattended, know your limits, and make a plan to get home safe before you drink.
If you believe you were drugged and assaulted, you do not need to report the incident to police. You can obtain a SANE exam at Mission Hospital or the Family Justice Center at 35 Woodfin St.
The exam has to be done within 120 hours to collect vital evidence. Anyone who does not file a report can report later at any time.
Drug-facilitated sexual assault is confusing for the person who experienced it, and it is not your fault. Sexual assault is only the fault of the perpetrator and it is never your fault if you are assaulted. A lack of a "no" is not consent, if you are intoxicated you cannot consent to sex. We are here, and we believe you!

What drugs are used in the commission of drug-facilitated sexual assaults?
Sexual assaults have long been linked to the abuse of substances, primarily alcohol, that may decrease inhibitions and render the user incapacitated. In addition to alcohol, the drugs most often implicated in the commission of drug-facilitated sexual assaults are GHB, Rohypnol (a benzodiazepine), ketamine, and Soma (see below), although others, including other benzodiazepines and other sedative hypnotics, are used as well. These drugs often render victims unconscious--an effect that is quickened and intensified when the drugs are taken with alcohol. A person also may become a victim after taking such a drug willingly. Because of the sedative properties of these drugs, victims often have no memory of an assault, only an awareness or sense that they were violated.
