News -- April 27, 2022: The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department issued a ticket to U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-North Carolina, on Tuesday for bringing a gun to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. According to a police report, the incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m.

Police found a loaded 9mm handgun in a backpack at a security screening checkpoint by TSA officials.
Cawthorn was identified as the owner of the gun bag. He indicated that the gun was his and that he cooperated with officers, according to police.
The city of Charlotte owns and operates the airport, which has multiple signs declaring "no dangerous weapons allowed," according to police.

According to a TSA spokeswoman, breaking guns laws can result in a fine of up to $13,900. It was unclear whether the agency will seek a fine against Cawthorn.

TSA discovered a Glock 9 mm handgun in Cawthorn's carry-on bag at the Asheville Regional Airport in February 2021. Cawthorn was not charged with any crime as a result of the incident.
