Macon County -- January 28, 2023: A bridge on North Carolina's N.C. 106 in Macon County will be
replaced with a modern structure

which will improve travel for locals and tourists in North Carolina.

The replacement of the current bridge will begin on Monday, after the N.C. Department of Transportation approved
the start of construction. Less than two miles from the Georgia state line, Highway 106 crosses Middle Creek to the southwest of Scaly Mountain.

No lengthy closures will be required while N.C. is being built. 106 (Dillard Road) (Dillard Road). Thanks to a traffic management strategy created by regional NCDOT representatives, access to local routes, such as Happy Hill Road and Highland Gap Road, will continue to be available. When traffic is reduced to one lane, traffic will be managed by portable traffic lights.

The new bridge will have 12-foot driving lanes and 8-foot shoulders, and it will be 107 feet long and 43 feet broad. As construction advances, the current bridge will be taken down by Mountain Creek Contractors of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, which won the $5.3 million contract as the lowest qualified offer. The contract stipulates that the full project must be finished by November 11, 2025.

When approaching and driving through the work zone, vehicles are advised to slow down, stay vigilant, and observe all posted signs.
