Asheville -- April 7, 2023: A Code Purple is in effect for the Asheville area as a spring chill is expected for the weekend of April 8–9.

On nights when the weather or windchill goes close to or below freezing, the initiative is a coordinated effort across shelters to offer emergency overflow shelter to the homeless.

The Veterans Restoration Quarters and Transformation Village at ABCCM are among the Code Purple shelters.

The purpose of the Code Purple procedure is to provide a coordinated effort among Asheville and Buncombe County shelters and other organizations to provide emergency overflow shelter to people experiencing homelessness when the temperature is at or below 32 degrees (including windchill).  During Code Purple, participating shelters will provide more beds with fewer requirements than their typical programming.
