Franklin -- November 2, 2023: On Wednesday afternoon at around 2:30 p.m. Emergency crews responded to a medical call at a local bank.

Franklin police report that two employees at the United Community Bank became ill after handling cash from the same deposit, which is believed to have had an unknown substance. The two employees were treated according to the report and are fine.

The bank was evacuated, and a second location was determined to be a residence. Law enforcement reported a strong chemical odor upon arrival to investigate the home.

Both locations were thoroughly checked by the FFR, North Carolina Department of Public Safety Regional Response Team (HazMat Team). The findings were inconclusive. FPD and FFR were assisted by the Macon County - NC Sheriff's Office and the FBI.

Law enforcement "have no reason to believe there are any other safety concerns at this bank or other banking institutions in the area."
