RiverLink -- Did you know that in Asheville, we are close to the headwaters of the French Broad River?
And what are the headwaters of a river? Headwaters are where streams begin. Since everything in a river moves downstream, the condition of headwater streams, whether good or bad, can affect a river downstream. The headwaters of the French Broad are just outside of the town of Rosman, in Transylvania County.
Where does the French Broad River go? The flow of streams in the French Broad River watershed are a bit counter-intuitive, as they tend north and west – at first moving away from the ocean. Leaving North Carolina, they flow into Tennessee, joining the Holston River to form the Tennessee River, then flowing west to the Mississippi River. Eventually, the streams of the French Broad River watershed empty into the Gulf of Mexico!
