Franklin, NC -- March 16, 2022 Franklin Police reported the arrest of a local man on March 11, 2022.

William Dale Sheffield, of Franklin, was apprehended on March 10 after a high-speed chase and a brief foot chase. Sheffield was apprehended by MCSO K9 Officers and patrol officers as he attempted to avoid deputies. Sheffield got out of his car and ran into the woods after reaching the end of a dead end road.

Multiple units went to the scene and were able to establish a perimeter, allowing K9 to quickly apprehend Mr. Sheffield. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Sheffield was wanted for violating a domestic violence order and was deemed a major threat to others.
Sheffield was aware that he was "Wanted" and that he was attempting to elude law enforcement. Mr. Sheffield was observed driving a car down Cowee Mountain towards Franklin by an MCSO K9 officer on patrol. Sheffield refused to stop in the face of bluelights and sirens, speeding away from the officer at almost 120 miles per hour.

Sheriff Robert Holland states, “Mr. Sheffield obviously has no concern for the safety of others and put members of our community in great danger as he drove recklessly at high rates of speed attempting to elude officers. Due to his current state of mind and the dangers he posed to others, we had no choice but to make every attempt to locate, stop and arrest Mr. Sheffield. It’s a blessing that it ended the way it did and we are very thankful.”
Sheriff Holland concludes, “Following my preliminary review of the incident, I believe that the deputies did an outstanding job. While there have been no allegations of wrongdoing against any officers involved and none are suspected, my staff and I will continue to review all In-Car-Camera and Body-Camera video as per policy to see that everything was done appropriately and what we can learn from this incident. The In-Car video and Body-Cam recordings of the incident will also serve as excellent evidence in the prosecution of Mr. Sheffield.”
