Macon County -- May 21, 2021: Macon Count Layw enforcement announced on Saturday a  family member filed a "Missing Person" report with the Macon County Sheriff's Office on Friday after not hearing from his sister for several weeks.

Detectives from the MCSO collaborated with a family member and the Rabun County Sheriff's Office to track down the woman and others she was known to associate with. MCSO Detectives worked with different law enforcement agencies throughout the day in an attempt to locate anyone who had seen or been with the missing person. Detectives were eventually led to two specific places in Macon County as a result of their inquiry.

Deputies secured both scenes, and the SBI was contacted for extra assistance. By late Friday evening, MCSO detectives had executed search warrants at the two locations, with assistance from the NC State Bureau of Investigations and the District Attorney's Office. Members of the Otto Fire Department and the Chief Medical Examiner's Office also contributed significantly.
Detectives identified Christopher Shields of Otto, NC (Macon County) as a person of interest over the course of our investigation, and he was located, interviewed, and released as the case progressed. Additional interviews were performed during their inquiry, and Christopher Shields would not become a main suspect in our investigation until later in the day. Shields was detained by the Rabun County Sheriff's Office during a traffic stop as a passenger in a car entering Rabun County Georgia after our field interview. This traffic stop was the result of investigators from the Macon and Rabun County Sheriff's Offices working together.

Sheriff Robert L. Holland states, “Based on credible information, two locations were considered to be possible crime scenes and meticulous searches would be conducted by our team. The first crime scene was a location where the missing person was last seen alive and the second is where the missing person may currently be located.”

Two detectives left the murder scene early the next morning to travel to Rabun County, Georgia, where they formally charged Christopher Shields with kidnapping. Shields is still being held at the Rabun County Detention Center, awaiting extradition to Macon County. Additional charges will be filed as needed, and we will keep our District Attorney up to date on our investigation.

Sheriff Holland concludes, “While we would like to provide more details, our investigation remains a very active investigation. Investigators continue to gather evidence and conduct additional interviews. We are no longer treating this investigation as a Missing Person case. We have recovered human remains and we believe these remains will eventually be identified as our original missing person. This investigation is now being conducted as a homicide investigation. We are not assuming the identity of the remains that we have and will do all we can to identify them as quickly as possible. Meanwhile we will continue to conduct a thorough investigation. Positive identification and cause of death may take some time but I am confident detectives will find these answers and the answers to many more questions.”

Law Enforcement communicated with the missing person's family and will continue to do so throughout the course of our inquiry. Additional information about the investigation will be disclosed when and if it is appropriate.
Our Criminal Investigations Unit encourages anyone with information to contact them.
