Macon County -- May 25, 2022: Charges have now been filed against two suspects in the case involving the individual reported missing to the MCSO on Friday morning. Following the missing person report being filed Friday morning information lead investigators to two specific areas of Macon County.

Following the execution of search warrants in the two locations, human remains and other evidence were collected by MCSO detectives and agents with the NC State Bureau of Investigations. Working with our District Attorney, we have made the decision to not release the name of the victim due to pending autopsy and not until identification of the remains can be made. Investigators with the MCSO have been in communication with the family of the missing person as she is the only active missing person case in Macon County.

Derick McCracken and Jessica Smith were both arrested Monday in Rabun County with the help of the Rabun County Sheriff's Office.
Shields, McCrackin, and Smith are all being held by the Rabun County Sheriff's Office awaiting extradition to Macon County, North Carolina.
Meanwhile, the investigation  is still ongoing.
