Asheville -- October 13, 2022: According to Dena J. King, US Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, a man from Cherokee, North Carolina, found guilty of second-degree murder, was sentenced to 168 months in prison.

A 21-year-old Yalegwo Ki Sadongei, an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, was sentenced October 3, 2022, along with a mandated five-year period of supervised release.  

The statement is made by U.S. Attorney King along with Chief Carla Neadeau of the Cherokee Indian Police Department and Michael C. Scherck, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Charlotte Division.

On December 13, 2019, Sadongei and the victim were at the victim's family member's home on the Qualla Boundary in Indian Country, according to court documents and court proceedings. The victim and Sadongei quarreled over the course of the evening before Sadongei shot the victim in the chest, killing him. According to court documents, after shooting the victim, Sadongei fled the scene and went to another family member's house to give his version of events. He tried to get rid of the gun on the way. The Hi-Point 9mm handgun Sadongei used to shoot the victim, along with a magazine, were later found by law officials.

Federal authorities are holding Sadongei. Upon the selection of a federal facility, he will be placed into the custody of the federal Bureau of Prisons.

U.S. Attorney King praised the FBI and the Cherokee Indian Police Department for their investigations into the matter in delivering today's announcement.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John Pritchard of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Asheville.
