Raleigh -- October 14, 2022: Five people were killed and two more were injured in a mass shooting on Thursday night, according to Raleigh Police Department.

Around 5 o'clock in the evening, shots were fired in the Hedingham area, close to Bay Harbor Drive and Osprey Cove Drive.

According to Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson, the crime scene stretched across the neighborhood for about two miles on Friday morning.

Racing toward the Neuse River Greenway Trail, opening fire there, the suspect shot two people in the neighborhood's streets before murdering three more people and injuring another two, according to Patterson.

Witnesses claimed the man was carrying a long gun, but authorities have not confirmed this or provided any other information.

Nevertheless, fear permeated the city for hours as the man evaded capture and authorities declared a situation with an active shooter.

The teen was apprehended along McConnel Oliver Drive and Old Milburnie Road just after 9:30 o'clock. When he was brought in, he had life-threatening wounds; by Friday morning, according to authorities, he was in serious condition at WakeMed.

The suspect may have hurt himself or been hurt while being taken into custody, according to investigators.

The shooter's motivation is still a mystery at this point. According to RPD, police are still looking into the event and will publish a 5-day report as is normal in cases like these.
