Charlotte -- April 1, 2022:  Dena J. King, United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, announced

on Wednesday that Christopher Michaud, 43, of Chesterfield, South Carolina, was sentenced to 147 months in prison
and three years of supervised release for robbery and firearms violations.

Robert R. Wells, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Charlotte Division, and Chief J. Bryan Gilliard of the Monroe Police Department join U.S. Attorney King in delivering today's statement.

Michaud robbed three pharmacies between January and April 2020, according to court records and today's sentence hearing, and illegally obtained substantial volumes of prescription opioids and other dangerous narcotics. Michaud used a handgun in two of the robberies. The first heist took place on January 26, 2020, when Michaud entered the Walgreens drugstore at 500 Fincher Street in Monroe, North Carolina, and handed the pharmacy clerk a letter. Michaud had a gun, according to the message, and asked the cashier to hand him particular prescription narcotics. Michaud departed the scene with different prescription prescriptions, including Oxycodone pills, generic Xanax pills, and Methadone pills, after the clerk agreed.

Michaud robbed the CVS pharmacy at 625 East Roosevelt Boulevard in Monroe on March 4, 2020. At around 6:15 p.m., Michaud entered the drugstore and handed the clerk a note requesting certain prescription medications and threatening to return and shoot everyone. Michaud displayed a small weapon at the store during the robbery and asked that the employee "make it quick." Michaud exited the store after receiving a bag containing prescription medicines from the clerk. Michaud robbed the Walgreens at 1993 Dickerson Boulevard in Monroe on April 2, 2020, in the third robbery of the year. Michaud displayed a handgun and handed the drugstore worker a note seeking prescription medications. The clerk obliged, but another store employee contacted 911 to report the robbery during the robbery. As he walked out of the pharmacy, officers from the Monroe Police Department apprehended Michaud. The stolen prescription pills and the weapon used during the robbery were recovered by police authorities at the time of Michaud's arrest.

Michaud pleaded guilty on June 23, 2021, to three charges of robbery of a business affecting interstate trade, sometimes known as "Hobbs Act" robbery, and one count of possession of a firearm during and in relation to a violent crime.

Michaud is currently in federal custody and will be transported to the federal Bureau of Prisons once a federal facility has been designated.

U.S. Attorney King expressed his gratitude to the FBI and the Monroe Police Department for their work on the case.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Taylor G. Stout of the United States Attorney's Office in Charlotte.
