Beginning April 1, 2022, eligible people in North Carolina will have their Medicaid postpartum health care coverage

extended from 60 days to 12 months. Medicaid will also cover qualified people who are pregnant or have given birth between February 1, 2022, and March 31, 2022, for a period of 12 months.

States might choose to extend postpartum coverage to 12 months under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The extension was included in the November 2021 state budget, which was approved. States have the option of extending postpartum coverage for an additional 12 months for five years, until March 2027.

“This extended coverage is an important component to help improve the health of families in our state,” said Deputy Secretary for NC Medicaid Dave Richard. “I hope we can build on this important step by expanding Medicaid in North Carolina to further support maternal health and reduce infant mortality by improving health before the pregnancy.”

Beneficiaries will now be eligible for continued postpartum health care coverage for a period of 12 months, commencing on the date their pregnancy ends and ending on the final day of the month 12 months following the pregnancy's end date. Even if certain events occur that may affect eligibility, such as a change in income or household/family unit, beneficiaries will remain eligible for continued postpartum health care coverage.

Most pregnant and postpartum women will be eligible for full Medicaid coverage. Services such as doctor's visits, prescription medicines, dentistry, vision, and hearing, as well as mental health and substance abuse services, may be included. Visit the NC Medicaid website for a complete list of benefits.

North Carolina is currently ranked 30th in maternal mortality and 39th in infant mortality in the United States. Furthermore, 13% of women in the state suffer from postpartum depression.

If you are registered in the Medicaid for Pregnant Women program, you will immediately receive extended postpartum coverage. A letter will be sent to all eligible recipients informing them of the change.

To be eligible for the extended postpartum benefit, all eligible Medicaid users must notify their local Department of Social Services when they are pregnant and the last time they were pregnant. All participants in all NC Medicaid programs, including those currently enrolled in MPW, are eligible for extended coverage.
